About Us

A clean, affordable, family-friendly community in the heart of Wheatland.

WELCOME TO STANDARD

Proud of history, excited for our future

Just look around. There are rolling pastures and gently sloping fields to the south, and the Chimney Hills rising on the horizon. Calgary is 80 km. away, and both Strathmore and Drumheller can be reached in less than an hour. This is quiet country life with access to nearby urban centres. It’s the best of both worlds.

Our History

In 1910, Danish families from Iowa relocated to the farmland of the Chimney Hills area, recently opened by the Canadian Pacific Railway. They settled in the “Dana” area, later renamed “Standard” due to a naming conflict with another town. Supplies came from Gleichen until the railway arrived in 1911. Businesses, banks, and a post office soon started up, and coal was mined at the south end of the village. A passenger train connected Standard to Calgary by 1913, and the Village was officially incorporated in 1922.

The Village of Standard marked its Centennial in 1922. Austin Knibb made a brief film to celebrate the occasion.
